Early Life, Family, and Education
On September 23, 1972, Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was born in Asheville, North Carolina, U.S. His parents are Tina (Mosley) and Michael Mauldin, a Columbia Records executive.
Dupri’s musical career began before he was even ten years old. His father had coordinated a show for Diana Ross in 1982, and Dupri got his chance to get on stage and dance along with ross. He performed as a dancer for the hip hop group Whodini when he was twelve and later appeared with Herbie Hancock and Cameo. Later, he decided to open the New York Fresh Festival with Run-D.M.C., Whodini, and Grandmaster Flash.
Career
Dupri has had a very successful career in music. He produced his first act, the female hip hop trio Silk Tymes Leather. He later produced a group album known as Totally Krossed Out with the teen duo Kris Kross. It became extraordinary due to their singles Jump and Warm It Up, written and produced by Dupri.
In 1993, Dupri established his record label called So So Def. He produced a collaborated debut album Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha with the female R&B group Xscape, which became a breathtaking album with the support of singles like Understanding, Love on My Mind, Tonight, and Just Kickin it. It ranked number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
During the same year, he met Da Brat on Yo! MTV Raps and signed her to his label So So Def Recordings. And their next debut was Funkdafiled in 1994. In addition to it, He collaborated with Mariah Carey and produced their first hit single, Always Be my Baby in 1995.
Dupri and Queen Latifah, a fellow American rapper, created a reality television series, The Rap Game in 2015. It invites emerging artists ages 11-to 16 who want to pursue a career in music. Other rappers like Usher, Ludacris, Da Brat, T.I., and Silento were invited as a guest to the show.
